Equivalent bus plus lorry flows are obtained by:

  1. Dividing passenger-km by a bus occupancy of 20 (5 less than claimed as the occupancy of coaches leaving Victoria coach station) or 16
  2. Dividing tonne-km by 15 (half the capacity of a 44 Tonne lorry)

Adding the results of (a) and (b) and dividing by (i) the days in the year, 365 and (ii) the track length, set to 32,000 km, yields the average daily flow per track.

Dividing passenger-km and tonne-km by the track length yields the average flows, or density of use.

 Road

  1. Lane lengths are estimated from:
  1. Motorway length x 6 plus dual carriageway length x 4 + single carriageway length x 2
  2. Motorway length x 6.5 plus dual carriageway length x 4.5 + single carriageway length x 2.25
  3. As above but with central reserves and hard shoulders treated as running lanes
  1. The passenger-km on the motorway and trunk road network are estimated by allocating the values for all roads in proportion to the non-goods vehicle-km
  2. Likewise, the tonne-km on the motorway and trunk road network have been estimated by allocating the values for all roads in proportion to the goods vehicle-km
  3. The average flow, or density of use, has been obtained by dividing the estimates of the passenger-km and tonne-km by the mean of the two estimates of lane length and by 365 days per year.

 Table 2a and 2b below provides the detail. At the foot of the tables are the flow ratios summarized in the text.   In calculating those ratios, the mean of the two estimates of lane length were used..The source spread sheets are here
